Mold spores are to be found everywhere in nature. There are
literally hundreds of different types of mold; most (but not all)
are not harmful to humans. Molds reproduce by making spores that
usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores are
released and drift through the air. When mold spores randomly settle
on a damp surface, where there is also food and oxygen, the spores
begin to grow and digest whatever organic substance they land on, in
order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the organic substances on
which they feed. Some food sources can include wood, leaves, mulch,
carpeting, some adhesives, paint, caulk, paper, insulation and in
many cases, mold will proliferate within dirt or other organic
debris, which can accumulate on virtually any surface.
If mold spores
settle on a moist surface, where a food source is available, a mold
colony can begin to form within 48 hours of contact. Left unchecked,
mold can become very unsightly and can also inflict great damage to
organic surfaces. In addition, some molds can negatively impact the
health of individuals who suffer from allergies or other respiratory
ailments. Particularly at risk are children, the elderly, those who
suffer from asthma or severe allergic reactions and those who
